Angela connects to the whenua in Rotoiti 15 through her kuia, Makarita Te Mutu Malcolm and her affiliations to Ngāti Tarawhai, Ngāti Rongomai and Ngāti Hinekura. Her mother, Grace Malcolm (nee Heremaia) was from Ngāti Tuwharetoa. Her father, Joseph Te Poroa Malcolm was a former trustee of Rotoiti 15 as he was on other ahu whenua trusts and incorporations. Angela has a close affinity to her people and marae of Ngāti Tarawhai as a result of the time, experiences and people who were around her in her adolescent and young adult years.
Angela completed her Master of Arts degree at Victoria University in 1995. The topic of her thesis is Ngāti Tarawhai and identity formation. Angela has devoted most of career to Màori Adult Education but also has a background in research and early childhood. She is currently a Director on Ngāti Tarawhai Iwi Trust Limited and a trustee of Rotoiti 15 elected in 2023.
The responsibility our tupuna left us as hunga tiaki or hunga manaaki whenua to retain and understand our ancestral connection to the whenua and environment is a fundamental part of our identities and of who we are as Ngāti Rongomai, Ngāti Tarawhai, Ngāti Pikiao and Tuhourangi. Mauri Ora
